Maoists can strike at free will
HYDERABAD: When Maoists formed a Central Military Commission in 2004, many thought it was another propaganda vehicle promoted by them.
But the spate of attacks on police installations across the country by the Maoists in last few months have forced skeptics for a rethink on the CMC's ability to strike at will.
Police officers associated with anti-Naxal operations in Andhra Pradesh are pointing out that the CMC had possibly planned the daring raid on Jehanabad prison on Sunday night, to secure the release of their Bihar unit chief Ajay Kanu.

"As Maoist cadres move in groups (armed squads and military platoons), only the CMC can mobilise the large number from different states and guide them to a targeted location," an officer said.
It is also being suspected that the CMC has planned the raid on a homeguards training centre at Giridih near Ranchi on November 11. The Maoists, after killing five policemen, looted over 185 weapons and 3,000 bullets from the police armoury.

The CMC said to have guided even the first joint operation carried out by Maoists from India and Nepal at Madhuban in East Champaran district of Bihar in June, which was retaliated by CRPF personnel.

Six out of the nine members of the CMC are from AP and it functions from a headquarter located in Chattisgarh-Jharkhand forest area. The Commission plans, coordinates and direct operation from time to time to the field commanders.
In all the incidents Madhuban, Giridih and Jehanabad hundreds of Maoists were mobilised to carry out attacks, a new trend. Earlier, a maximum of 40 to 50 ultras used to join a raid.

"The weapons looted from the police armoury at Giridih too might have come in handy for the Maoists to carry out the raid on Jehanabad prison," the sources pointed out.
Meanwhile, AP police officers are not very perturbed over the Maoists grouping hundreds of cadre and laying ambush on police installations. "We have a much better intelligence gathering mechanism, and our forces are also prepared to tackle any attack," a police officer said.
